This quote is talking about the age of New Imperialism. The quote talks about a very important issue because there are many legacies of imperialism that many countries are still dealing with today. The quotes point of view is that European rule had its good and bad sides. The person that is saying this quote is probably a Indian that was under British control during the British Raj period during 1858-1947, and because many Indians call British rule the “Knife of Sugar”. The things that the British did in India shaped this person's perspective. Some might say that European rule was great, some may agree with the quote and some may say that European rule was horrible. European rule creates conflict between people and causes death. Before the Scramble for Africa, the country Rwanda had 2 groups on Indigenous people, the Hutus and the Tutsis, these 2 groups coexisted with each other, but after the Europeans came, everything changed. The first country in control of Rwanda was Germany, giving the Tutsis key positions in the colony because they looked more European because they were taller and had a sharper nose. In 1918, the end of World War I, Germany gave this colony to Belgium. The Belgians decided to continue giving the Tutsis key positions, and even making them wear cards to identify who was Tutsis, who was Hutus. This led to ethnocentrism issues between the Tutsis and the Hutus. Whoever resisted would have their hands, feet, ears cut off. Adding on, many people were starved and died of diseases. If you could not get enough rubber, then you would have to pay with your hand. From 1885 to 1908, an estimated that the indigenous population decreased by about ten million people, but some say the population was reduced by half. Finally during 1908, after being pressured by other nations, King Leopold gave control of the Congo back to the Belgian government. This shows that Europeans are selfish and make people suffer. This supports my position because their selfishness leads to the suffering of many indigenous peoples. Europeans grew cash crops, but these cash crop led to food shortages, this shows how selfish the Europeans were, and the Belgian Congo also shows how selfish they were for their own personal gain. This relates to the source because this is the “knife” in the “knife of sugar”. This could be one of the incidences that shaped the perspective of the person saying the quote. The fact that Europeans were selfish which lead to the
