Recommended: Nietzsche's will to power
Why is it that one of the strongest human drives seems to be a desire for power? Power can be defined as something that is held within or is wanted. In the novel The Lord of the Flies the author, William Golding, describes how the main character Ralph struggles to gain power by having to deal with the malevolent actions of Jack, a boy who was also stranded on the island. Meanwhile, the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley depicts how Victor Frankenstein, the central character, seeks to diminish his power by trying to relieve himself from his own creation. In both novels, the characters demonstrate a power struggle by having to face their own creations, handling the obstacles brought by the antagonist, and corruption
Power is the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way, Power is not only strength it is a human relationships, power is the authority one person holds over another. In the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. Three characters Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, and Judge Danforth. All want to gain power as the play goes on. Triumph of the Will is a 1935 propaganda film directed by Leni Riefenstahl. It documents the Nazi rallies in Nuremberg at the time. Adolf Hitler commissioned the film, so the film's predominant theme is not very surprising; Germany is returning as a great power, with Hitler himself as the leader who will bring glory to the nation. What is fascinating about this film is the way it cloaks fiction with fact to construct a strong influence. Triumph of the Will was successful due to the way it obscured the boundary between propaganda and documentary.
WHAT IS POWER?? Power is a dangerous weapon in life. It can both destroy and save the world. In Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, and in Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, power is used to abuse people.
Power in today’s can be used in many different forms such as to show strength, rank, encouraging others, being an influence, being a leader, and much more. The way you use power in a situation can have a positive or negative impact on an individual, community, country, nation, or even the world. In the short story “Miss Temptation” by Kurt Vonnegut, he describe how power can impact an individual way of thinking of others due to past experiences. Power can anything one allows to have a dominance over their lives. It is the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.
Power is the ability to actor do something in a particular way. People who have too much power and abuse it, and turn their power into a negative power. Fear and tyranny are abused by people with power creating a negative effect on society. Leaders with a huge rule of power will abuse their role as a leader by creating a fearful environment.
When seventeen year old Will's mother is killed in a car crash, his world is torn apart. One week later, he starts searching for an ultimate truth that will lead him to all the answers. As Amy Jackson said, power is “a gift from God” (Jackson, “The Gift of Power”) However, power is not the purpose of life. Unlike God’s eternal power like Romans 1:20
Power, the one thing everybody desires, plays a major role in the lives of the characters of Frankenstein. Throughout the story, Shelley frequently emphasizes the theme of power and the constant struggle that the characters face to gain power over themselves and others. The two main characters, Victor Frankenstein and The Creature, show the most struggle for power throughout the story, both internally and over each other. They look to gain power of knowledge, power of themselves and power over one another. This struggle for power creates a constantly shifting dynamic amongst characters.
When one rises, one must also fall. Humans are a power hungry species, always striving for control and dominance. However, that power is not always easily accessible, yet humans are determined to get access to that power no matter what or who has to be sacrificed. If one has that power, another is willing to commit anything to get a hold of that said power. In Section II of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Kafka demonstrates how the shift in power from one person to another affects everyone’s social standing.
Power/Powerlessness I have chosen the quote “Many people feel they are powerless to do anything effective with their lives. It takes courage to break out of the settled mold, but most find conformity more comfortable. This is why the opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it’s conformity.” by Rollo May
Some philosophers, like Schopenhauer, looked at the world, and life on it, as meaningless and purposeless. He failed to recognize that people could impact, even change the outcome of the world through deliberately making informed decisions based on their own values. One of the key concepts to Nietzsche’s philosophy is his ideal of the will to power. I believe that the will to power is the foundation of Nietzsche’s philosophical thought and refutes Schopenhauer’s dim and negative view of the world.
Power is always coveted in any society and the world of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is no different. In the play, Macbeth, a noble lord, shows his hunger for power with thoughts to remove an heir to the throne from power. Macbeth’s impatience to be king leads him to stain his honor by using murder. Macbeth travels further down the path of evil by arranging the assassination of a friend.
Yet do I fear thy nature; /It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness… Hie thee hither, /That I may pour my spirits in thine ear” (1.5.14-295. Everyone wants power, it is a common goal that many people strive towards, but many people do not accomplish this goal. Power has many positive and
