Night Essay The book Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel, a teenage boy from Germany who survived the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a period of extreme brutality and torture for Jews like Elie and his family in Germany and its neighboring countries. Under the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler and his followers, also known as the Nazis, Jewish people endured the most terrible tragedies in recorded history. Nearly six million of them were killed and many of them were taken away from their homes and brought to concentration camps where they were starved and forced to perform horrendous jobs. Thus, he simply did not care about the outcome and saved his father. Lastly, when the SS officers were attempting to remove his father from the train, thinking he was dead, he refused to let them do so. He states, “I woke from my apathy only when two men approached my father. I threw myself on his body. He was cold and shaky. I slapped him on the back. I rubbed his hands, crying” (99). His father seemed unconscious, but he did not want to be left alone. He would not have been able to live without him. He needed to be around his father because he was his only incentive to keep going and not give up on life. Although he was aware that going against the SS officers was dangerous and he could die as well, he argued with the officers to leave his father alone. He also tried his best to wake his father up because the importance of his father and his company was more than his survival. In short, Elie and his father prioritized each other enough to provide them with the ability to face challenging situations that came up due to their desperation to stick together at all times. On the other hand, some people believed that neglecting their families was the only option left, since it seemed to prevent them from staying
