The book Noah’s Flood. The New Scientific Discoveries about the Event that Changed History Ryan,W. & Pitman, W. (1998) talks about a possible cause of the historic flood that sparked many myths, including the famous Noah’s flood story. Their hypothesis is the flood story was caused by overflowing of the mediterranean sea basin and an over exaggeration of the story. They purpose that it is possible that people may have been living by the sea and when the flood occurred the people living by the sea would have thought that it was a worldwide flood. I will provide some myths that have a large basis in reality as well as give a brief evaluation of these myths. First off we have the Native American giant beaver myth. This myth is about a giant beaver that used to roam North America. Although in many of these stories it involves some sort of magic of sorts the giant beaver is still a very real creature. In “The Giant Beaver: a prehistoric memory” by Jane C. Beck, Beck gives many of these stories including the Giant beaver as a character, but also many of these stories include another character, a “culture hero” named Gluskap. Most of us have heard the story of the Trojan Horse and the Trojan war. The story of Troy is considered by many to be based on actual events and many historians have tried to determine whether or not the story is true. In “The Trojan War Is There Truth Behind The Legend?” by Trevor R. Bryce. (2002) In this article Bryce looks at any evidence there is for the occurence of the Trojan war. He find that that there are many events that seem to relates to the Trojan, war he can not find any evidence to support that it was an actual historical event. Instead he suggest that many of these events were told as stories and soon developed in a story that resembled the story as we know it today.
