For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
That is the definition of an deviance, the others are not. 4.) What is this the definition of – Someone who inherently affects the ideas and ideals, as well as goals and customs of a group that they are a part of. a.) Group-Dynamics b.) Primary group c.) Leader d.)
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
After reading these articles I garnered a greater insight on what deviance is and how it is formed. According to the Outsiders reading, deviance is essentially a label that is put on a person of whom commits an act or exhibits behaviors that stray from what is normal or expected. These people are therefore also labeled as “outsiders”. Outsiders in that they are seen as those who are to be placed outside of a certain group do to their deviant behaviors. There exist many views of deviance.
Deviance is categorized as a violation of cultural norms. In order for one to express deviance, they must act out against societal norms which are known as expectations and rules that "lead the way" for how an individual should act. Therefore, its much easier to depict from there that mostly one's society is what ultimately differentiates what the rules and expectations are as well as what it needed to break those rules that they have somewhat instilled and ingrained into our daily lives. To add, due to society and different eras of socialization deviant behavior evolves over time.
The norm violation that will be taking place is complimenting strangers. The purpose of the norm is to see how the person will react to me complimenting them. How the norm would be "violated"is that I will compliment the customer. Since it is a positive norm violation the reactions will mostly likely be positive. Some examples that will be expected is the customer will smile and say thank you, compliment me back, or ignore me.
Breaking a norm, no matter how small it seemed, was actually much more difficult than I anticipated. My partner and I decided to break elevator etiquette by facing the back wall, rather than the doors of the elevator when riding it. Instead of walking into the elevator and facing our bodies to the front of the elevator, we stayed facing the back walls. Nothing else in our behavior was out of the ordinary, we didn’t speak to anyone, nor did we make eye contact with anyone. We kept to ourselves and acted normally, except for the fact that we were facing the wrong direction.
Reading Response Deviance is the term that is coined for someone doing anything outside the norms of social standards. Straying from the social norms is not necessarily a bad thing, for instance a woman doing jobs that. in society are considered a man's job, and vise versa, a man that stays at home to support his kids would get strange looks from people. When people do what's not within the social norms there is usually some sort of negative reaction. whether it be jail time or nasty looks from people on the streets.
It means that deviance which is an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule remains incomplete without a discussion of crime which is an act that violates the criminal law/prevailing norms. Society sees most crimes such as murder (taking a life and sinning against God and man), robbery (interfering with other people space and property), rape (forcing a person without its own will but it encouraged by a “hidden culture of rape” that holds women secretly asks for it) as deviant but some crimes like violation of traffic law are not deviant. However, not all deviance are crimes such as homosexuality which is a big deal in regards to our social norms today, which is also considered to be a deviant act although
Deviance behavior is described as a behavior that violates the social norms. Throughout our lives we observe so many deviance behavior. For example, the revolutions throughout the world demonstrates how a group of people are going against the norms, they want a change in the norms. I have been seeing so many deviance behavior throughout my life, so many action that is abnormal. Such as this weekend I saw a car that looked so weird.
My mind is uncertain when I think about “deviance.” This word is very controversial and it’s definitely a topic worth discussing. I personally find that deviance is the thoughts and actions that go against norms in which society considers unacceptable. I refer to crimes as a deviant act, but does everyone think the same way as I do? Absolutely not!
Deviance has many functions in society. Although deviance violates social norms, without it, we would not have rules, so it helps form, guide, and shape society’s norms and goals. Social norms are different from culture to culture. Norms that may be acceptable in one culture may be frowned upon in another. Emile Durkheim quotes that “deviance and deviant behavior is an integral part of all healthy societies (Adler, 2014, p74).”
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
Deviance is any behavior that violates social norms and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Deviance can be criminal or noncriminal. Media helps us frame the way we think, act, and choose. Children have growing brains
Functionalists, conflict theorist, and interactionist all have different views and focus on different parts of society and its people. What is deviance? Deviance is a behavior, trait, or belief that departs from a norm and generates a negative reaction in a particular group (Ferris and Stein 151). It is considered a social construct.
