Deviance is categorized as a violation of cultural norms. In order for one to express deviance, they must act out against societal norms which are known as expectations and rules that "lead the way" for how an individual should act. Therefore, its much easier to depict from there that mostly one's society is what ultimately differentiates what the rules and expectations are as well as what it needed to break those rules that they have somewhat instilled and ingrained into our daily lives. To add, due to society and different eras of socialization deviant behavior evolves over time.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
Deviance is any behavior that violates social norms and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Deviance can be criminal or noncriminal. Media helps us frame the way we think, act, and choose. Children have growing brains
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. The behavior I decided to break was dipping my fingers in the container caramel was in and then proceeded lick my fingers after doing so. I choose to break this social norm because one, the caramel sauce was really good, and two I was testing to see if my mother would say anything: normally on my birthday she lets me get away with
Reading Response Deviance is the term that is coined for someone doing anything outside the norms of social standards. Straying from the social norms is not necessarily a bad thing, for instance a woman doing jobs that. in society are considered a man's job, and vise versa, a man that stays at home to support his kids would get strange looks from people. When people do what's not within the social norms there is usually some sort of negative reaction. whether it be jail time or nasty looks from people on the streets.
It also means not doing what the majority does or alternatively doing what the majority does not do. For instance, behaviors caused by cultural difference can be viewed as deviance. It does not necessarily mean criminal
Social norms are defined within each culture as socially accepted ideas of behavior. Norms are often so subtle that people do not realize that these unspoken rules exist until they are broken. With this in mind, I decided to test the boundaries of these norms by taking my dog out in public. I chose to take my Yorkie-poo, Yoda, to both Target and Lowes of Rocky Mount. Before breaking this norm, I hypothesized that that neither place would warmly welcome us.
The social norm I decided to violate is to be nice to my sister. Most of the time we just argue or we will not even talk to each other because we are so busy doing our own thing. This norm acts as a mechanism for social control because most people think that siblings never get along and that if you can not control how the siblings act towards one another people just assume they do not get along. I had done a few things that day to be kind to my sister like fix a game on the computer for her and buy her dinner. For people that would not know us as siblings they would not think anything of it, but for instance for someone that knows us like our mom she would know something was up.
Opposing people, which are against breaking social norm find it, a dissatisfaction toward society. To perform this violation and go against the normal behavior which are not acceptable in society. The social experiment I choose to conduct was wearing my clothes backwards instead of wearing them forward. It’s the perfect opportunity to gage other people psychological reactions, and observe their reactions, on me breaking this norm, which is a dress code violation of not wearing the appropriate direction which is forward. When doing this act it will trick the minds of the people; that adds to the mechanism.

In reading the material provided for this unit, I discovered that “norms” is a term used to describe what the majority of society considers to be acceptable behavior, such as verbal and physical actions while interacting with others. Notwithstanding, this can vary immensely, depending on a number of factors, such as location, heritage, societal status, etc. (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). Consequently, the “norms” in general tend to be what guides the laws that are implemented and is the reason that there are an abundance of laws that are different from state to state and municipality to municipality.
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
Crime is any act which breaks the laws of society, such as murder, rape, speeding etc. Social control is enforced by agencies such as police and the courts, more specifically defined than deviance. Deviance is behaviour which moves away from controversial norms and values such as burping, pass wind in public and queuing. It Can be positive e.g. extreme intelligence. Although in some situation in nature – time dependent of factors, place, who is involved.
Deviance is a term used when a person violates a social normality. Deviance can be minor or they can be extreme. Using public behavior for example, if a person were to walk around without shoes in public, it would be considered odd and deviant behavior. Or if a person invaded someone 's space it would be considered rude and questionable behavior. My reasoning for not breaking social normality is simple: to break a social normality would be considered odd and I would rather not be percieved as such.
