On a humid summer’s day, in 1787, 55 delegates traveled from 12 different states to meet in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation. Although they knew that the Articles of Confederation wouldn’t hold, they never intended on replacing the entirety of the Articles. The Articles of Confederation were a form of government that was swiftly created, during the Revolutionary War. It led to a central government that lacked power to do simple tasks. The delegates seeked to create a new central government that was powerful enough to lead the country, but wasn’t ruled by one person or a group of people.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
After reading these articles I garnered a greater insight on what deviance is and how it is formed. According to the Outsiders reading, deviance is essentially a label that is put on a person of whom commits an act or exhibits behaviors that stray from what is normal or expected. These people are therefore also labeled as “outsiders”. Outsiders in that they are seen as those who are to be placed outside of a certain group do to their deviant behaviors. There exist many views of deviance.
The film Kids Return, directed by Takeshi Kitano delves into the complex themes of deviance and conformity through the story of two high school friends, Shinji and Masaru, who struggle to find their place in society after dropping out of school. The film skillfully portrays the struggles and challenges that come with conforming to societal norms and expectations, and as well as the consequences of deviating from them. Both Shinji’s and Masaru’s experience with trying to find their place in society, can be understood and analyzed through the lens of social psychologists such as Leon Festinger, Abraham Maslow, and Muzafer Sherif. According to You May Ask Yourself by Dalton Conley, stigma is “a negative social label that not only changes others’ behavior toward a person but also alters that person’s self-concept and social identity.” There are three main types of stigma according to Ervin Goffman. Physical, which include physical or mental impairment such as anorexia or leprosy. Moral, which is signs of flawed character such as convicts or drug addicts. Tribal, which is membership in a discredited or oppressed group such as cults or mafia.
For example Deviance-which means “any behavior or physical appearance that is socially challenged or condemned, because it departs from the norm and expectations from a group”(Ferrante).

Howard Becker’s Labeling Theory explains social deviance based on societal reaction and subsequent labeling of an individual for infractions of the social rules established in a particular time or place which may or may not be applied fairly, justly, or with any consistency. The deviant—rule breaker—and the conformist—obedient—are easier to determine according to the theory; however, “falsely accused” and “secret deviance” lie on opposite ends of the spectrum and define the exceptions to the theory (Lynxwiler, 2016).” Falsely accused” is a concept Becker describes as a person who is labeled incorrectly based on the perception of deviance (Lynxwiler, 2016). Deviant behavior is the behavior that is different from the most powerful norms of the society or can also be defined as odd or unacceptable behavior. In sociological way deviance is simply any violation of societal norms. There are many reasons why a person has deviant behavior which includes biological , psychological and sociological explanations. the most popular sociological theories are Structural Strain Theory which was developed by Robert K merton as an addition of the functional point of view on deviance. Virtually everyone understands that there are differences among the human race, but we all fail to successfully establish a complete definition for deviance, which essentially means being different. In context, deviance can be described as a historical term that is ever-changing (Curra, 2014). In addition, the text depicts that the only way to be considered deviant is to be judged by someone else, without judgment or disapproval there is technically no deviant act (Curra, 2014).
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
Bessie Head’s “The Deep River: A story of Ancient Tribal Migration” is a short story written about how the Talaote tribe was divided into two groups. The point of view is third-person narration full omniscient. In the story, everything is happening around Sebembele, the chief of the Talaote tribe. The narrator also informs the reader about Sebembele’s feelings, evident with the statement “It was not hatred he felt but peace at last”(1103). Being an omniscient character, the narrator could read Sebembele’s feelings.
Deviance is any behavior that violates social norms and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Deviance can be criminal or noncriminal. Media helps us frame the way we think, act, and choose. Children have growing brains
Deviance is a term used when a person violates a social normality. Deviance can be minor or they can be extreme. Using public behavior for example, if a person were to walk around without shoes in public, it would be considered odd and deviant behavior. Or if a person invaded someone 's space it would be considered rude and questionable behavior. My reasoning for not breaking social normality is simple: to break a social normality would be considered odd and I would rather not be percieved as such.
Throughout society there are many forms of deviance, such as deviant behavior, mental illness, social stigmas, and crime. I personally am focusing on personality and personality in reference to deviance would be mental illness. Mental illness is defined, identified, and treated, even though it is typical for many to think of mental illness only in psychological terms. Deviance has many factors and plays a big part in all the different personality disorders that many people have. Personality disorders are maladaptive patterns of behavior of a specific kind, which causes long-term difficulties in personal relationships or functioning in society.
