Again, this is a standard that I have used before for a previous lesson, but I felt like it could be expanded even further for students to be motivated or take an interest in the learning of the content. The Bakersfield Police Department does tours of the station, which I think would be a great asset in the students being able to visually see the type of work police officers do, they get to see them work with the K9 dogs, and a police officer can provide students with a background on themselves: why they wanted to become a police officer, what is their favorite part of being a police officer, and what will student’s need to accomplish if they want to become a police officer one day. I would also want to set up a field trip to Grimmway Farms for my students. Grimmway Farms is known for making all different forms of carrots, whether its baby carrots, snack carrots, shredded carrots, and so on. Grimmway Farms would show the students the process of how they plant, grow, and prepare the carrots to sell. The farm provides the students with lunch and gives them a small bag of baby carrots to take home. Again, I think this is a great opportunity for students to see first-hand the process of farming or growing a produce, the work it takes to package it and get it sent out to the manufactures who are selling the product. If a student has the aspiration or goal to become a farmer, this experience is one that introduce them to the work and type of environment in which they will be.
