Leadership, Management, and Followership Leadership is multi-faceted with many skills, styles, and possible outcomes. Nurse Cantrell kindly agreed to allow students to interview her to gain knowledge in this area. Through analyzing the Bible, AACN Essentials, and ONCM Competencies a greater understanding of leadership is explored including what is required of a nurse leader.
Introducing Nurse Cantrell Nurse Cantrell began her working career as a patient care assistant (PCA) at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She earned her associate in nursing from Sinclair Community College and then her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Ohio University online. The authentic style of leadership is defined as “building honest relationships by remaining true to personal values and honoring all relationships” (Barnett, 2023 [PowerPoint slides]). Nurse Cantrell does this by leaving her office door open and having an open door policy, allowing any staff to come to her for help any time she is in her office or around the unit. This fosters a trusting relationship between the staff and herself. She also intentionally checks in on her team regularly and seeks out their feedback. Patient-centered care is one of these competencies. K1, S1a, and A1a are part of the competency that Nurse Cantrell displayed in the exemplar. She understood the dimensions of care by integrating the mom’s concerns into the education on the unit. Nurse Cantrell assessed the patient and mom’s needs and implemented and then evaluated the care they received. Nurse Cantrell also saw the scenario through the patient’s eyes by recognizing that if the mom was supported her bond with the patient would be stronger and this would benefit the patient. Evidenced-based practice is also a competency in the model. Nurse Cantrell demonstrated K2, S2b, and A2b. She uses research and evidenced-base practice to inform her clinical decisions. She is a part of continuing education courses with research components and individually researches issues that arise in patient care. Regularly she bases care off of researched best practices. This is highly valued on her
