In today’s society a hospital represents a place of healing for the public, and their services all share a common goal, to restore overall patient health and wellbeing. It is expected that while under the care of hospital staff a patient’s condition will improve, however what is not expected is the contraction of a new illness while receiving their care. Hospital acquired infections (HAI) also known as nosocomial infections have been a growing concern across the country in recent years (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013). As nurses and nurse’s students regardless of position we each have the unique ability to create better environments for staff and patients (CNO, 2002). By creating this innovative project and initiating it on my placement floor I believe I am demonstrating leadership within my unique position in healthcare. Complexity leadership theory contrasts these models and suggests a paradigm for leadership that is much more dynamic in nature. This approach to leadership fosters creativity, learning, adaptation and interactiveness between the leaders and followers. Complexity theory recognizes that leadership is more than one person, it is rather an interplay of a variety of variables. This theory also recognizes that these dynamics are unpredictable and are subject to change. The reason why I have chosen this article is because I plan to adopt complexity leadership theory into the planning and implementation of my project. With this theory as my guiding framework I believe my project will stimulate others innovation and perhaps morph into something larger then currently imagined. It will allow my followers to propose ways to adapt or change my project or create their own to better the care we are able to provide on the surgical
