This degree will acclaim myself as a registered nurse, this type of nurses are responsible for caring and educating patients about their current conditions and at best to help them improve by carrying out duties such as to “perform physical exams, provide health promotion, administer medications” (nursingworld.org) and much more. I strongly envision that this career choice fits properly for me. The decision to be someone that cares for people, someone who needs to commit to learn, someone designed to have the hunger to work further only seems justifying for myself. The inspiration to be this someone came from my parents, teachers, friends and especially coaches. My parents who always remind me to be the finest caretaker I can be in this big family, my teachers, specifically one of them is Ms.Kelly,who influences me to always output my best self and reminds me that I can reach heights in life, my loving friend, Austyn Ah Choy, who never fails to note to me that I have the ability to show everyone that I can achieve greatness, and lastly my softball coaches who never give up on me and who help build my engagement towards hard work.
As I researched what kind of careers would interests me, I discovered nursing brought these two worlds that I love together. My clinical experience is diverse. I had the opportunity to work in various well known hospitals in the greater Boston area. During my preceptorship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on the acute psychiatric unit, I managed up to 6 patients with a wide variety of psychiatric disorders along with managing their medical conditions.
My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.
A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.

My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. My inspiration to become a nurse was watching my mother make a difference in the lives of elderly at a local senior living community as an Activities Assistant for years. Even though, she was unable to go back to school due to personal circumstances, the compassion she showed towards others around her was something special as she took care of them as if they were relatives. Whenever I had free time, I would just sit and play a game with the elderly residents hearing their life stories from when they were young.

As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. Growing up with parents very passionate about the health care field has had a tremendous influence on my decision to pursue the health sciences. This was because of two things: my interest in helping others and my fascination with science.
