“The Passing of Grandison” by Charles Chesnutt and “Editha” by William Howells follows the tale of two young “lawyer” whom both share the goal of wanting to win the hearts of the women they each love. The Red Badge of Courage is the story of Henry Fleming, a teenage boy who romanticized the glories of war. He enlists in the Union army during The Civil War despite his mother 's disencouragement. Henry 's regiment is a group of men some excited for battle, others anxious. Henry however felt as if he didn 't fit into the group, he was a bit more reserved and private. Soon after enlisting he discovers war wasn 't quite what he had imagined.
The story and the movie “The Ransom of Red Chief” have a bunch of differences. In the movie, Sam tells a random kid to send a letter to Mr. Dorset. But in the story, Sam took the letter to the post office and a mail man took it to Mr. Dorset. Another difference is that in the story, the kidnappers offered Johnny Dorset some candy and kidnapped him. But in the movie, the kidnappers didn’t offer him candy and just put him in a trunk.
The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane, is the story of a teenager, named Henry Fleming, that enlists in the Union army for the glory of being a soldier. Henry’s fears grow and then cause him to run from battle, he later receives an accidental injury and is mistaken for a battle wound by his friends. When he realizes that he is not the only soldier that is afraid in battle he gains the courage he needs to go back into battle and becomes one of the bravest soldiers in his regiment. Henry as an example of how a person deals with their fears by turning to friends and facing their fears. This is shown when he runs from battle, comes back to regiment to face the consequences, and then goes back into battle to eventually become the color bearer.
The story “The Red Badge of Courage” by John Hustson and the slave narative “Incedents in the Life of a Slave Girl” by Herriet Jacobs share the theme of courage. This theme is shown in different ways in each story. The main characters in these two narratives gain the same theme of courage in different ways though adversity. While living different lives Harriet Jacobs and Henry Flemming both learned to be courageous in order to make it through situations they faced. Harriet Jacobs had to gain the courage to escape slavery and better her life.

The Heart of a Chief by Joseph Bruchac is a realistic fictional novel published in 1998. The protagonist of the story, an eleven-year-old boy named Christopher Nicola, struggles to take action when his people are divided over whether or not to build a casino on a sacred island. Synopsis The novel opens with Christopher (Chris) Nicola, a boy from the Penacook reservation in New Hampshire.
Hero “Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary (Geraid Way).” A person who walks beside you on the sidewalk or smiles at you when you pass by them could be the hero that saves you when danger is present. A hero is an ordinary person who has extraordinary traits of acting quickly in a difficult situation, being determined to help any citizen in need and always steps up to help even if it means possibly getting injured. Heroes are people who will respond without hesitation when danger is upon them.
The lady tells Huck she supposes she knows where Jim could be stowing away, for she is certain she has seen smoke over at Jackson 's Island. Huck gets to be apprehensive when he discovers that the lady 's spouse and another man are setting out toward Jackson 's Island to hunt down Jim. Before Huck can leave, the lady makes sense of that he is not a young lady, and Huck makes up yet another wild story for clarification. Without motivation behind the characters, the story would not captivate the reader. Character motivation and its impact on the reader are prominent in pieces of literature such as “Charles,” by Shirley Jackson, “The Landlady,” by Roald Dahl, and “The Monkey’s Paw,” by W. W. Jacobs.

Until Ben found a hole in the cave wall about as big as his arm, he inspected the hole and put his arm through to the other side. His face went blank and his body started jerking towards the wall, I sprinted over to him and tried to help him escape the grasp of whatever was on the other side. Ben Retracted his arm “I totally got you, you should’ve seen your face!!” And began laughing hysterically at my concern. I whispered some profanity under my breath and began scanning the cave.
As the light began to fade, the shadows of the tree branches, begin to cover over the dirt path. As the boy, Caspar, steps he crunches on the dead leaves and fallen branches, he begins to hear the branches rustling as the wind whistles past his ears. He trips over and his face hits the mix of dead leaves, dirt, dead bugs and sharp twigs. As he lays on the ground he looks to his right and sees an almost illuminating, crisp white stone, which roughly resembles the silhouette of a skull, but with an oddly shaped depression on the left side. He starts to stand up as he covers his hand with his black jacket sleeve as he wipes his face, to free it from the filth.
