Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba
On the month of February 2016, President Barack Obama announced that he will be visiting the Cuba on March 21, 216, this would make him the first United States president to visit Cuba in more than 50 years. The island, which is only 90 miles away from the state of Florida, is a communist country which is currently ran by Raul Castro, Fidel Castro’s brother. Cuba’s relationship with the United States has been damaged since the Cuban revolution in 1959, then on January 1961, the two countries had a diplomatic break. After more than 40 years, the United States and Cuba restored their diplomatic relationship in January 2015, which is one of the reasons of why president Obama is visiting the island. Obama believes that by vising the island more opportunities will open not only for the United States, but also for Cuba. Some individuals believe that Obama’s visit will have no impact on the communist regime. They believe that as long as Cuba does not have freedom of speech and expression, the Cuban regime will not change and will still continue to silence and harm the island’s citizens. Marco Rubio, junior senator of the state of Florida and current presidential candidate, and Ted Cruz, the United States senator from Texas, believe that president Barack Obama should not visit the island. Ted Cruz believes that the president should not visit Cuba as long as the Castro brothers are in power and Marco Rubio believes that the president should not go visit the island until it’s free. On the other hand, presidential candidate Hilary Clinton supports Obama’s visit to Cuba. She believes that it is important for the president of the United States to have presence in the island in order to promote hop and to stress its human rights
