The Affordable Care Act, or also known as Obamacare, was signed into law on March 201o by president Barack Obama. Since the 1900’s many economist, politicians, and citizens have seen that the health system was broken. And the Affordable Care Act is one of the most far-reaching reform acts since Medicare was passed in 1965.

It requires that individuals get coverage or pay a penalty at the end of every year. The policy has requirements for both insurance companies and the consumers to follow. For the insurance companies, they must not deny coverage due to any pre-existing health conditions. Also, they must offer the same policies to people of the same age and location, without considering gender or any health conditions, give patients with a clear explanation of their benefits. And to stop setting lifetime and annual limits on benefits, and to increase covered preventive care. The law also establishes minimum standards for health insurance policies, offers subsides for low-income for individuals and families. It will expand Medicaid coverage and reforms Medicare reimbursements, and fines businesses that have more than 50 full-time employees that don’t offer health coverage. But if a person does not get insurance through Medicaid, Medicare, or employee-sponsored insurance, then they must get it through a private company. Also, with the affordable care act allows some parents to keep their children on their plans up to the age of 26, even if they do not live or are financially supported by the parent. He had wanted to provide insurance to everyone, without being discriminated by race, gender, ethnicity, race, or any pre-existing health conditions.
