Obesity: On the rise for families and children This advertisement shows the reason why kids are obese in America. The advertisement shows the process of food within the fast food restaurants. It portrays that getting a bottle of soda and hamburger you would cost $1.98 whereas, a bottle of water and a salad you would cost $6.98. For families that are having a hard time making ends meet would choose the cheaper deal. According to the food documentary Food Inc. corn is processed in many different forms such as cellulose, saccharin, polydextrose, xanthan gum, maltodextrin, and high fructose corn syrup- which are in the bottle of soda. At the top of the advertisement it starts off, as “Maybe this is why kids are obese” this statement portrays pathos because it is targeting the individual’s emotions. When I looked at this ad the first thing I saw was “kids” and “obese” and because I have kids their health is very important to me and the food choices they make is very critical. When my kids pack their snacks for school, I often tell them to pack a fruit instead of cookies. Starting my kids in a good habit of food choices early will get them to make better choices, as they get older. According to Food Inc. “1 out of 3 people born after the year 2000 in the US will develop early onset diabetes” (Food Inc.) with this being said everything from meats, chickens have been genetically engineered to grow twice as fast to produce more. Food has been modified to last longer and nothing is considered natural anymore. When we watch a food commercial advertisement on the television or even an ad in a magazine or Internet it portrays a variety of delicious food. For example, McDonalds burgers shows a big juicy sandwich but it will not tell you that their meats are processed and put a warning sign consuming this burger everyday will increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol—if the company was to put this on their …show more content…

Now that you know about all the dangers of being obese and what factors it causes would you still want to choose a hamburger over a salad or even French fries over carrot sticks? Break that habit of poor choices of food. If eating healthy does not fit your budget then that is where you are wrong because there are many ways to eat healthy. Instead of going to the supermarket where everything is expensive, consider going to a farmer’s market where they grow their fruits and vegetables locally and won’t have to worry about the farmers engineering the foods. When you go to farmer’s market, it also supports your local farmers and economy and you can get good deals. I went to the farmers market last Friday in Ewa Beach and I bought one dozens of bananas and 5 papayas all for $5.00—supermarkets cant beat that deal. The swap meet at the Kamehameha shopping center where the old drive in movie used to be, are open on Saturdays and Sundays and sells a variety choices of food to cook from meats, fish, vegetables, and even fruits. There is a farmers market going on almost everyday on the island check your listing and take the time to go! Most of us would just rather go to the supermarket down the road because it convenient—well convenient sometimes won’t save you money. Support local, and buy local.
