Obesity in emerging adults In today’s society, obesity is becoming more and more of a concern, due to the fact that it is affecting 38% of the general adult population in the United States. Adults who attend college are at an even greater risk of gaining weight and developing obesity. Many factors come into play when an adult becomes overweight, such as how they were raised and the food choices they make (Johnson, 3). Knowing the reasons why adults gain weight is crucial in the fight against obesity. Adults who are overweight can end up having long term health issues later on in their lives, although each person is different in how weight affects them, identifying the causes and products that are making adults obese is important to know so …show more content…

Does poor eating habits cause weight gain? Is there a connection where stress and emotional/mental health issues play a role in obesity? Can significant others influence others to gain weight? In this study, the independent variable of influence eating habits, significant others and stress and emotional/mental health issues were considered as factors that could be related to weight gain, leading to the outcome of obesity (dependent variable). Eighty-one people that meet the criteria, participated in answering a 4 question survey covering topics such as “When and how did your weight start to increase?” to “What had been the major barriers that prevented you from reaching your weight goal?” (Johnson, 4). All participants were female undergraduate students aging from 18 - 25 years old, who had class 1 and class 2 obesity.
