Obesity Paradox: True Biological Effects On Survival Among Older Adults

464 Words2 Pages

Do you think the observed “obesity paradox” represents the true biological effects of obesity on survival among older adults or is merely due to some methodical limitation of relevant studies?
Ans. I think that the observed “observed paradox” represents the true biological effects of obesity on survival among older adults because the body weight associated with maximal survival increases with increasing age. In this case, I think the obesity paradox is precise because The “U” shaped curve with the highest risks seen in graph were severely underweight or overweight/obese, which can be very harmful to the patient’s nutritional status. There are many implications on people who are underweight such as poor appetite, eating disorders and energy and nutritional deficiencies. Apart from that, BMI >30 considered obese and they can contribute to several chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and arthritis. In addition, the obesity paradox encompass that obese people lean to survive longer and better.

I think the potential reasons for the observed U-shaped relationship between BMI and risk of mortality in older people is the bottom of the curve for BMI and mortality was between 24.0 and 30.9 with the lowest risk being between 27.0 and 27.9 can be excessive body fat or visceral fat. Additionally, an individual with the certain amount of body fat could protect their organs even if they are overweight or obese. But in case of obese people with BMI >30 could have severe visceral fat or excessive body fat, in which their fat distribution and cardiorespiratory fitness modify the association between obesity and mortality. Alternatively, people who are underweight have BMI of <18, and lack of body fat can be dangerous to them in comparison to those in the obesity paradox range because lack of fat on them will weakened their immune system, increased the risk of osteoporosis and feeling
