Obesity: Todays Lunch, Tomorrows Tip of the Scale “Billy quick what do you want me to pick up for dinner?” yelled his mother. Billy cheered from the back seat of the car “a value sized happy meal from McDonalds!” Billy’s mom then made her way towards the McDonalds drive thru for the 3rd time that week. Although some people argue that others cannot regulate what they eat, obesity is quickly becoming a major health issue and if the government does not step in to help, people will continue to create health issues for themselves. Those who oppose believe that the government cannot tell them what to eat. More children are starting to suffer from these problems at a much younger age than in the previous generations and part of it is due to the fact that children are constantly seeing ads on the latest new grease filled burger or sugar filled pastry and want to have it. Parents agree to their demands for these unhealthy meals because of the convenience and the low price without even realizing how harmful these non-nutritious foods are for their children. Igna Kiderra spoke to a physician who studied that “people look to others when deciding how much to eat and how much weight is too much.” People turn to those around them when looking for what to eat and find it acceptable to put on a few pounds if others are okay with it. Some even overeat “to make [themselves] feel better” and end up feeling worse. (Paulos) Even though it is a free country fast food restaurants tempt people who are struggling with obesity to buy larger portions just to make more money. It is imminent that people will not do anything about this matter themselves and need someone to step in and do it for them. The government can watch what ingredients restaurants are putting in
