The government should have a say in American’s diets. America today has become a very unhealthy country with very high obesity rates. “More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity. Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese” (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases). The government should be able to control and limit our food options. This will improve our health, help us save money, and live an overall happier life. If the government regulated Americans’ diets it would change our country and citizens’ health for the better. Many Americans who are obese or overweight can be taught to eat healthier and possibly lose the weight that is physically and mentally dragging them down. Many heart diseases, diabetes, physical problems, and other issues pertaining to someone’s well being can be caused by bad eating habits. The only way people can break those habits is if someone, like our government, can help them. They will do this by controlling what we can and can not purchase in the stores, as …show more content…

That food they are spending their hard worked for money on is just affecting them in negative ways. If the government could step in, it could possibly save a lot of money for many people. That money could be spent elsewhere, like college funds for their children, paying off their house, or donation to charities. “Americans report spending $151 on food per week on average” (Gallup). If you do the math that is $7,582 per year just on food. That is an extremely high number, especially when you think about all the many years people have to buy groceries.
