According to a study released in 2013, by 2030 the rate of overweight people living in the U.S will increase to about forty-two percent and health care costs will be approximately $550 billion per year (Marshall). People refuse to acknowledge how much money they spend on fast food which in the long run is increasing their chance of becoming overweight. Not only are overweight people spending money on fast food, but they have multiple health problems that rob them of their money. Obesity is becoming a significant problem in the U.S and people will continue to ignore it unless an “easy” solution appears. Certain people may feel that being obese is not a problem because it is simply a lifestyle choice. People have the freedom to live how they want and it should not effect anyone else. Some people are in agreement that obesity is not society’s problem it is a personal choice and problem. Some people’s lifestyle choice is to be unhealthy and inactive and that is their fault, not anyone else's. However, obesity certainly takes a toll on society because of the increase in costs for everyone. When multiple people become obese, insurance rates, health care, and other medical costs will increase for everyone. About 21 percent of U.S medical spending or about $190.2 billion are related to the obesity illness for health care costs (“Economic Cost Of Obesity”). When referring back to the paragraph about the cost of obesity, it clearly states how much people spend on obesity a year. Not only how much obese people spend, but it shows how much healthcare is estimated to increase and how much obesity costs in medical bills.
