The increase of obesity in the United States has two fold with the argument that foods made-at-home has decreased over time causing less nutrition in an average American's diet because away-from-home foods is much higher in nutrients that Americans over-consume such as fat and saturated fat. However are lower in nutrients that Americans under-consume such as calcium, fiber, and iron. “Food eaten away from home surpassed in sales that of groceries for foods purchased by personal income spent on total food by Americans, on average, fell from seventeen to ten percent, driven by a declining share of income spent on food at home.” (USDA ERS P.6) Families spend more money on food when they have a bigger income, but food represents a low portion of …show more content…

“Approximately sixty four percent of most adults in the U.S. are overweight, including thirty percent who are or are facing problems with obesity. Overweight and obesity are associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and also exact significant economic costs. The medical expenses attributable to overweight and obesity are estimated to have reached as high as ninety two billion dollars per year—roughly nine percent of total U.S. medical expenditures.” (USHFC P.1) Whether eating or taking out, Americans are eating more and more of their calories from a fast food restaurant or full service. These influences also are affected by at what time of the day we eat whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner and what we eat at those allocated times. On average, breakfast away from home decreases the number of servings of whole grains and dairy consumed per thousand calories and increases the percent of calories from saturated and solid fat, alcohol, and added sugar. However some Americans skip breakfast and eat around the hour when a person should be eating lunch.
