Without a solution to obesity, Americas waist is going to keep expanding until a large pant size will then be a small. This country needs a solution, and placing a tax on sugary foods and drinks is a good one, for the purpose of turning people away from foods that decrease health. There needs to be a tax on sugary foods and drinks, to stop the growth of obesity. Right now, two people can go to the store with five dollars, the first person can purchase five candy bars while the other can barely afford one bag of apples. This needs to change. The government plays a big role in the food that Americans eats everyday. Taxing has also been a part of buying items, it’s the governments way of making more money. But a tax has not been placed on food. The government does not need a tax on food because, they have this thing called the Dairy Checkoff, which is an incorporation that works hand in hand with fast food chains to sell more cheese, to make more money. Or is what is cheap and sugary, right? Taste buds are the greatest enemy of today, if it tastes good people buy it. A lot of people say that, it’s the people’s choice to buy what they want, where they want and for pretty much any price they want. But the government needs to make sure that the options the people have are good quality for there health. “Obesity in adults jumped from 13% between 1962 and 2008 through it has since leveled off.” (Drenkard, 2011) The food Americans eat is killing our health system. Peoples health is getting so bad that in America an obese person is someone who had a BMI (body mass index) over 30. In England, someone here that is considered normal, is considered obese.
