The Government’s Influence on America’s Diet

The United States was founded to be a “City on a Hill.” The founders wanted other countries to look up to them. Although this idea still remains, it isn’t as greatly looked upon as it was when the founders made this nation. The government is trying to make it shine as bright as it did in its earlier years. One of the things it is doing is that it is trying to control american diets so that less of the population will be obese. Not only is it the federal government trying, but also states are also trying to achieve more fit standards, and this isn’t always appreciated. New finds such as the new discovery that eating red meats may lead to cancer. People will still eat red meats because it is their choice to do so. The government once tried to increase soft drink tax by 20%, people without weight problems bought less and people with weight issues still bought it, regardless of the price. Laws that try to increase tax of ban unhealthy food are unlikely to pass because of how the people want it how it currently is. In addition the government thinks that the average American can’t make simple decisions over necesites. While in reality the average American is just doing what they seems fit for them. The government has already started to take away freedoms because of events that have and are happening, like gun control laws. Those are much larger topics of discussion because of the threat they have, unlike unhealthy eating. Making our own decisions is a big part of being an American, other countries have very large control over what their people can do.
