The subsequent essay is reflection essay of classroom observations, significant strategies, alterations, and knowledge obtained by the author during the required practicum assignment and the implementation of a unit lesson plan. Each observation provided various facets of teaching and reading strategies, as well as assessment procedures that influenced the writer’s Language Arts Unit Plan. Observations The required observations of three different English Language Arts classrooms began with an observation of the eighth-grade classroom of Ms. Denise Rimshaw. Ms. Rimshaw welcomed this writer to her classroom with a short introduction and quickly provided each student with a handout of the desired selection of text, and engaged her students into a choral reading. As the students engaged in their task, an observation of the classroom setting supplied this author with a layout, that offered specific areas for independent student reading, computer use, and a library of teen books appropriate for the age group. Tom Whitley. Mr. Whitley’s classroom was cold and lacked the physical setting that places emphasis on a literate environment. Mr. Whitley’s lesson focused on vocabulary in the beginning phase of his unit lesson plan and he taught through a teacher lead format with very little students participation. He incorporated the utilization of a vocabulary journal and a whiteboard in the front of the classroom that displayed the key vocabulary and definitions for students to obtain. The dynamics of the classroom were very mechanical and the students did not acknowledge the writer being present in the classroom.
