The people were straying away from God and began to worship animals, Idols, “less divine beings” like the greek gods. An example is Zeus, Artemis, Eres, etc.
In Colossians 1, Paul is saying that we have to give thanks to God for what he has done. One observation that I notice was that God sent prophets to carry the world to people. The world firstborn means eternal life. In Genesis 43:33, it said “ And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement.” I think this is saying that when we get to heaven, we will sit before God according to our birthright from oldest to youngest. The second word that I came upon and research was the word preeminent. Preeminent means surpassing all others; very distinguished in some way.
