Introduction1 This paper is an exegesis of verses 24 to 26 of chapter 5 of Paul's epistle to the Galatians. Most probably written between the late 40’ and the early 50’ of the first century AD, the epistle to the Galatians was occasioned by the spread of Judaizing teachings among the Christian communities set up by Paul in the Roman province of Galatia.2 The Judaizers were Jewish Christians who believed that some of OT rituals and the Mosaic law were still binding on the Church; hence, they insisted with Gentile converts that they kept practices like circumcision as necessary for salvation.3 Reaffirming his apostolic authority, Paul objected against the Judaizers and argued for faith in Jesus Christ as the only source of justification, and for …show more content…

In verses 24 to 26, the passage I will consider, Paul wraps up his discussion of Christian life. First, he states that those who belong to Jesus Christ, have “crucified” the flesh and its expressions (5:24); then, he concludes by inviting his readers to live according to the Spirit, and to behave towards one another accordingly (5:25-26). In my exegesis, I give a general exposition of the contents of these three verses. Moreover, I will focus on a couple of expressions employed by Paul and to unpack their significance towards a proper understanding of this passage. These are his reference to the crucifiction in chapter 24 and his expression “be guided by the Spirit” in verse 25.
