I had the opportunity to observe a class of infants from ages 11-16 months and I found it very interesting. The teacher I observed used respectful, responsive, and reciprocal care. She and the caregivers used them while dealing with the infants.
Respectful care is when an adult treats a child like an adult would like to be treated. It does not show respect to children when adults multi task. Especially when caring for children adults have to give infants 100% full attention. I witnessed respectful care when the teacher was changing an infant’s diaper. The teachers informed the toddlers about what is going to happen next. For example, the teacher told the toddlers when they were going to pick them up so the toddlers shouldn’t be surprised or shocked. The teachers also allowed the toddlers to participate in the action the caregivers were going to do on the toddlers. For example, the teacher said, “Maya can you help me pull down your pants so I can change you.” The toddler felt part of the experience. The caregivers smiled and used eye contact as they spoke to the child. The teacher did a good job by giving respectful care to the toddler. The teachers made sure the toddler was treated just like a person should be. The action was done in a leisurely manner giving the toddler enough time to get comfortable. Each toddler had their quality time with their teacher and the teacher respected the way the toddler preferred to do each action. The toddlers gave no fuss when doing anything even if they didn’t love the activity because they felt part of it. I learnt from this event to let toddlers participate in the action and to give them eye contact and a
