The author in the novel, Harriet Jacobs wrote in The Life of a Slave Girl to warn the Northern white women of all the dangers they might encounter. She wrote about Linda Brent, who was a brave-enslaved African American woman from the South. Linda would have to encounter many obstacles throughout her life as a slave worker. Even though Dr. Flint overlooked her as a worthless woman and abused his power over her for her sexual relationship, Linda’s children Benny and Ellen saw the potential in her. Without them being able to do something accordingly to defend their mother, all they could really do would be to look on the bright side. The mistress being such a hypocrite by supposedly being in love with Jesus, being kind and all that sort of stuff when in reality she would brutally overpower her slaves. Once she passed, Linda’s life seemed to come crashing down the road; starting to realize that she was not unlike the other girls, Linda was forced into slavery. Something she had never underwent nor really experienced by the fantasy/power her parents left her mind set on because of the same thing, so obstacles would never be that big of a problem and she would hurdle them and continue on her life. She begins to live with masters who completely neglect her and see her as nothing but something that is going to be a waste. Due to the fact that she was not very good at working since she never really worked because her mother was the one sacrificing everything and taking care of her really good not letting her know that she belonged to someone. The masters take the cruelty level with Linda to an extreme, treating her way worse than a slave would normally be treated by sexually abusing her and other stuff and she was in denial for all of the years she was with this family; uncertain why, maybe as the fact for her parents trying to prevent her as much as knowing that she was a slave which made her unaware of how to do several tasks and had several stuff in her mind while she was forced to do those …show more content…

Never expecting these results; Linda knows that she must stay close with her children Benny and Ellen to protect them and serve them as a mother. Over the time she spent working in the field she had enough imagination to come up with a plan to try and run away with her children and also think about her maternal instincts or individual selfish self, but then realizes it would be nearly impossible/possible even though she had to sacrifice her freedom. She cannot bear the abuse and the abandonment much longer, so the decision being made was to hide in her grandmother’s attic for seven years, hoping that leaving her children behind with Flint was a good idea since he promised he would take care of
