The Odyssey Many people deem Odysseus to be an archetype hero. But was he really? Sure, he won many wars, but did he show the characteristics that matter? No!
The famous American president Calvin Coolidge once stated, “Heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion.” In other words, a person may have heroic qualities but is not necessarily a hero, since the true indication of heroism in an individual is shown by his or her behaviors in different situations. In Odyssey by Homer, the protagonist Odysseus uses his godlike charm and cunning to return to his homeland, despite the fact that the mighty god Poseidon wishes that he never returns. Though Odysseus is developed as a character with heroic qualities, his use of said qualities within certain situations cause him to be portrayed as an antihero, as shown through his lack of control, self-centered actions, and excessive bloodshed.
In the story “The Cyclops” By Homer, Odysseus is not a hero. Odysseus escapes from the Cyclops lair after losing several men and he starts to jeer at the cyclops, “If I could take your life I would, and take your time away, and hurl you down to hell” (line 306-308). Odysseus invites himself into the cyclops home and steals his food while the Cyclops is not home. When the Cyclops returns Odysseus tricks him and stabs his eye out.

He sent and trusted three of his men to scope the island but instead they ran into and joined the lotus eaters.

He left his family the day his son was born, to fight in the Trojan War. It took him twenty years to get back home. He fought just to get back to his island with his family.

Odysseus and his crew were sweeped of path and became stranded on an island with Cyclops. The cyclops were the opposite of friendly and didn’t care about anyone that stepped behold them. When Odysseus and his men get on the island they decide to journey around the island a little bit and are quite interested in a cave near shore. When they go inside they see bunches of food but, unfortunately Polyphemus the son of Poseidon welcomes the men by eating two of them. He leaves odysseus and his men trapped in the cave, so while in there they make a plan to escape.
