There are over 24 books in the Odyssey. There are 5 authors in the Odyssey, those authors are, mainly Homer, but with the help of, Richmond Lattimore, Robert Fitzgerald, Robert Fagles, and George Herbert Palmer. They are all a huge part of the book the Odyssey and they all played an important role of the progress of the book. All of the books have a different part. Homer wrote this book to tell about Odysseus, his life, and journey. The Odyssey was written between 700 B.C.E and 800 B.C.E. The Odyssey was told to tell all about Odysseus, King of Ithaca, son of Laertes and Anticleia. Odysseus has to go through a serious journey with all kinds of gods and goddesses to get him back to Ithaca but he has to do things that make him stop along the journey. He does some not good things while he is on his trip. He is on this trip to become an epic hero, but Odysseus encounters some gods/ goddesses that make him not do the things he supposed to do on the trip back to Ithaca. Yes, he has done some things that he shouldn’t of done but he had to do those things to make sure he got out of them. One action that he did was that he has loyalty. “He saved his men and brought them home and saved his own life”(1:9). His loyalty shows that he is a hero, he also wants to help everyone that he can. He wants to save himself and his own men, so they can get back to their family in Ithaca. Another action that he has is he reflects morals and values of civilization. “Mentie you lugger hard and foot back to the mast lashed to the mast” (12: 16-17). He thinks about civilization a lot.
