Oedipus v.s. Creon: Who is the better leader?
“The quality of the leader is reflected in the standard they set for themselves.”-Ray Croc. Leadership is a civic duty that relies on one person to lead his/her group for a better tomorrow. However, the two people we are comparing are King Oedipus and King Creon, and they’re quite different on how they perform their leadership duties. The man I chose was Oedipus as the better leader than Creon because he showed his was honesty and open-mindedness to the people and a knowledgeable man that save the city from a monster. Although he may have some flaws that dulls his own leadership.
The first reason I nominated Oedipus as an exceptional leader was because at the beginning of the story he appeared to be wise and knowledgeable godlike. He was able to commit a heroic deed that saved all of the people of Thebes from the monstrous Sphinx. “ You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers. Come listen to me- do what the plague demands: you’ll find relief and lift your head from the depths.” Sophocles, line 245-247, page 262. Oedipus’s main issue was he married mother, he killed his own father, and so the curse of the Thebes occured. When Tiresias told him the truth, he started to deny Tiresias saying and began to insult him. “ It does but not for you, old man. You’ve lost your power, stone-blind, stone deaf-senses, eyes blinds as a stone!” Sophocles, line 422-424, page 278. This quote showed that Oedipus can be petty and stubborn, thus he reviled Tiresias even more but later that ate up his own pride. Although upon hearing this, he still sentenced himself to exile and it seems like he cares for his own people first before himself which in the end, Oedipus was the most perfect and righteous
