I chose the resource “Redefining Black Womanhood in Hip-Hop Music Videos” by Murali Balaji as my piece to analyze for this assignment. This journal article stuck out to me the most, as I feel as I need to be educated more on black womanhood and the culture that comes along with it. Along with wanting to learn more about the real culture of black women, I also wanted insight into the ideal culture, as in how people think black women act, what their culture is, and how they “should” be. Through my analyzation, I concluded that the study of this piece was on not just the cultural industries controlling and changing the image of black woman and their culture. I believe this is key to detrimental effects on the prospective viewpoint people have on black women, such as being imaged either as (large) intuitive mother figures or as the human embodiment of animal sexuality, rather than who they really are (Balaji, 2008:6). After reading this in the article, it provided some insight to me that I had been seeing black women portrayed like this in music videos all my life but had never given any thought into it. Now realizing this, I believe I will pay more attention to what I am seeing and try not to make any kind of assumptions or judgements in my daily life relating to black
