Have you read “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare? Well, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s speech, “The Mysterious Working of the Adolescent Mind” , a TED talk discussion, explains about how the adolescent mind works and grows. In the play “Romeo and Juliet” there was 6 deaths, and the two young teens, Romeo and juliet, fall in love and commit suicide because of a family feud that lasted long enough for anyone to even remember why there was a feud in the first place. In the TED talk speech, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a neuroscientist who uses MRI to study the Prefrontal cortex that is still developing in the adolescents mind, talks about how adolescents think and act as they age into teens. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s thesis on adolescent development sheds light on some of the nonsensical decision making in shakespeare's Romeo and juliet, as characters certainly face the risk-taking, impulse control, and mood swings she describes. First of all, Romeo and Juliet’s choice of getting married was a major risk that they took, which was only based on their emotions. “Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow,” a quote directly from shakespeare’s play on page 1027 proves that Juliet is rushing into the marriage.
