Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck. The novel follows the tracks of George Milton and Lennie Small. A film that is similar in style to Of mice and men is To kill a mockingbird directed by Robert Mulligan, The story looks at the lives of a lawyer (Attiicus Finch) As he fights for a black man called Tom Robinson.Within these Text the themes and ideas of loneliness, racism and courage are presented through dialogue, speech, setting and camera shots. In the novel Lennie and George were always traveling trying to find work. Whilst traveling they were quite alone not having anyone but themselves to keep them company. In the novel Steinbeck used setting incredibly effectively conveying loneliness as at the start of the book he describes the scene saying. “The flame of the sunset lifted from the mountaintops and dusk came into the valley, and half darkness came in among the willows of the sycamores.”(P.g 12)This descriptions provides the reader an insight into the conditions that George and Lennie were living in during their travels between towns. This description also shows the reader that there is not much around Lennie and George to keep them entertained. Just themselves and nature. In the film loneliness is present through the character Mayella Ewell. Mayella was a lonely character who spent most of her time in her house whilst her father and kids were away. When Tom Robinson came past her house she took advantage of Tom. This can be heard through Tom’s testimony where he states. “She sort of jumped on me, She hugged me around the waist, she reached up and kissed me on the face, She said she never kissed a grown man before.” This scene highlights the struggles Mayella faced and the characterisation portrayed by Mulligan making her seem as if she was
