Piper Cluckey Mrs. Kipfmiller Honors ELA 9 12 April 2023 Title HOOK! John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” is a novel about what it means to be human and teaches us the importance of friendship. The story begins with two men, George, who is small and quick, with sharp strong features and Lennie, a huge man, with wide, sloping shoulders, on the way to work on a ranch. Once they reach the ranch they moved into their small bunkhouse and start working, they face many conflicts well working for their dream of owning their own ranch. Although Goerge and Lennie are close, they are very different, which leads to many conflicts as well as some great connections. George and Lennie were dropped off, and were walking to the ranch when they decided to get some water. George was told to be “thin and quick, slender arms, and a thin bony nose.” (2) He may not be very big but he has a smart mind. Leading us to Goerges mental state, he is more mentally aware then Lennie as he often shows the trait of understanding. The night before the two of them go to the ranch Lennie starts to threaten to run away after George yells at him about dinner, but because he is so considerate he said , “ No- look, I was just foolin’... I want you to stay with me.” (14) This happens again in the future and he continues to care for Lennie anyway. Finally, socially he is loyal but also short tempered. When Geogre and Lennie decide to stop and make dinner on the way to the Ranch, Lennie asks for ketchup, and pouts when he is denied. Then goes on to find a mouse Goerge gets mad and goes on to call Lennie a “crazy fool” (11) This upsets Lennie, when he sees this he goes back to making Lennie his food he made “Enough beans for four men” (12) and forgiving him.
