Of Mice and Men Movie Review By:Sookie Drabla Director: Gary Sinise Director Gary Sinise brings the literary classic Of Mice and Men to life. The novel written by John Steinbeck features Love, Loyalty, and Loss. The movie especially portrays the character's traits and adds a new dimension by using sound to show emotion throughout the story. Unlike the movie, the book does give you more background knowledge about the story. If you plan to watch the movie, the book may help you understand more about the plot. As far as the character traits go, the characters seem much more alive in the movie. In the book, lennie seems more as a person that didn't really get an education, and just wasn't smart. In the movie, the actor that plays Lennie portrays him as a more mentally ill character. However, there are similarities from the book to the movie; Lennie looking up to George like brother, Curly being a tightly wound “tough guy”, and his wife seeming more like a “tart” as they say in both the movie and the book. Starting from the beginning of the movie, you see from one of the first scenes that is George sitting on the train. There is very solemn creepily slowly music playing in the background. Then after some credits roll, the girl with a ripped dress comes on. There is very frantic, fast paced, suspenseful music going on while Lennie and George are being chased out of town. As the story goes along Lennie and George find another job. While they're working in the field, the music is pretty happy, and more country like. Throughout the whole movie, the music and sound director (Mark Isham) made sure that when something good or happy happened there would be music with major chords, but if something bad happened then there would be minor keys in the music. It made a big impact on the feel of the scene and how the characters were
