To begin, the classification of people is unethical and cruel. Wiseman write, “Who and what determine these positions and power plays?” I understand her question exactly who or what are these classifications based upon, where they came from. Judging or assuming one person may have certain tendencies, characteristics, or actions, without knowing them personally is rude. People are most often differentiated by their race.
Classification has to with division between two different groups. Symbolization can be names or symbols used to show differences between two different cultures. Dehumanization, denies humanity from a human being. Organization, organizes by state or by militias to provide deniability of the government. Polarization is when extremists drive groups apart.
If there is no group of people to categorize then the judgements towards them
Racial profiling is ineffective because most descriptions of suspects are too vague and when police set up a description of what a criminal looks like, if they were to base it on the race of the criminal the amount of people who would fit that description is immense. The Boston Marathon Bombing is an example of this. When the police were on the lookout for possible suspects, they were looking for any brown men who were wearing backpacks. Elahe Izadi wrote an article titled "Racial Profiling Is Ineffective in Catching Terrorists" in which she discusses the flaws of racial profiling. Izadi points out, "Even if the public had known whether the suspects were white or "dark-skinned," that piece of information was still too vague to be useful—how
The hostility between homosexual individuals and supporters and strict, religious people illustrates a divide in the country consisting of different views; Both groups pressure, rationalize, and stereotype the other, but in the end one group is angry and the other is hurt, and no movement to evolve the situation exists. In the past and in modern-day, American homosexuals and heterosexuals get scrutinized and disgraced because of their opinions in groupthink and towards one another. One group stereotypes outsiders because what they believe is different from their opinion. The groupthink article defines stereotyping out-groups as when “people outside the group who criticize decisions and actions are viewed as “enemies” who do not know what
We need to categorize these people into groups in order for our brains to not overload with information. Stereotyping is not bad, prejudice actions are. We need to give everyone the benefit of the doubt that everyone is
Ethnocentrism occurs when one culture comes into contact with another. It the evaluation of one culture based on preconceived ideas that have derived from the customs and traditions from one’s own culture. William Summer, an American sociologist, believes that an ethnocentrism is “A view of things in which one’s own group is the centre of everything and all others are scaled and rated in reference to it” (Sorrells 2013). This phenomenon can have detrimental outcomes; such as stereotyping and prejudice both of which may hinder intercultural relations and assimilation therefore impacting on societal cohesion.
I agree with you the it is difficult to narrow down a topic or focus on a specific subgroup. I tend to see the big picture, so I sometimes over think a topic. I like your analogy of comparing tortilla soup to Hispanic cultures. There are so many different Spanish speaking groups that can be considered Hispanic. Much like tortilla soup, the Hispanic culture can widely vary, but at the core still has similar influences and characteristics.
Stereotypes are used on people of many different races and religions to mock the way they are. Many do not like what they are called, yet they are still called these things as it helps define who they are. Although these stereotypes are not always true, people still use them to torment others of who they are. Media and society place many stereotypes on different types of people. I am a teenage boy, who is of the Indian nationality.
Another socially defined term is ethnicity, which is based on one’s cultural characteristics like language, religion, and traditions. Some attempt to
Just like a fingerprint, no single individual is exactly identical, every person has traits that set themselves apart from one another, and make them unique in their own way. However, to this day society sees unique as “weird” or “odd” for little things such as not having the same characteristics. Classifying and placing people in categories based off of physical appearance or even hobbies is the “normal” and it has been that way since humans could conceive an opinion. With a substantial use of stereotyping throughout the media categorizing certain groups and perceiving them negatively, the world has been heavily influenced to follow in the same footsteps and carry on that movement. Arising from stereotypes, misconceptions have become more common than ever, having false speculation about groups based on physical appearance or by word of mouth.
Misconceptions are assumptions, or a mistaken belief, a person has because he or she is apart of the group. These misconceptions are not exaggerated and usually have no truths to it. Misconceptions and stereotypes about people also often get falsely confused with prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is a person’s hostile opinion or feeling is based on something they have no knowledge about, thought, or reason behind it. Discrimination is the unjust treatment of a person due, the group, class, or category to which that person belongs to.
