Expanding oil and gas drilling, a useless investment
Every week or so, we hear in the news about some pipeline or other oil exploitation project. These are always really controversial subjects. They lead to manifestations and petitions from the population. Many governments don’t know how to choose between the environment and the economy. This is a big debate, especially in North America, where many deposits have been found in the last years. However, we shouldn’t keep expanding oil and gas drilling because it’s not good for the environment, for future economy and it isn’t needed anymore. Expanding oil and gas drilling is dangerous for the environment because it contaminates water. According to EIA (U.S. energy information administration), the exploitation of natural oil leads to reject some dangerous substances that can kill aquatic life and all the undersea ecosystems. Like Tyler Priest, associate professor of history and geography at the University of Iowa says, some states in the United States, like Alaska, have no other jobs to make people live. However, this is not a solution to have a good future economy. Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action Inc., support that most of the time, oil companies give jobs for the time they extract oil from the ground, but when it’s finished, all workers lose their employment without any compensation. Instead of investing in a short-term economic project, governments should work on developing renewable energies, which give long-term jobs and help having a healthy environment (Zipf). Cindy Zipf also states that a good part of the U.S. economy is also based on a clean environment, with fishing, boating, surfing and tourism business. So to stop oil and gas drilling expansion would help countries to have a better future
