Drilling for oil has caused many environmental issues over the years; now the United States wants to drill in ANWR, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. People should not be able to drill in ANWR because of the long term problems of the native people, the Inupiats, and the environment. Drilling for oil disrupts the environment in many major ways and also changes the Inupiats’ lives. Also, some people think that drilling there will help the economy, but the oil there will only last for a short amount of time. These three main reasons, not to drill in Alaska, will be covered. The first reason is that the Inupiats’ lives will be changed. The Inupiats are the only human settlement in ANWR, doc. A. Even though their settlement only contains 200+ people, …show more content…
As stated in document B, only 8% of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would be considered for exploration, but the oil that might be found there won’t be in one large area, documentE. All of the oil doesn't just go to one spot, it forms pockets. Most of the pockets found in AMWR won’t be that big. So in order to get the bigger pockets of oil, the oil companies will have to go out of the 8% percent of ANWR they were given. The pipeline used to transport the oil from one point to another will cover land. In order to get to Prudhoe Bay at least 50 miles of piping will have to be use. The 50 miles do not count the pipes used to get oil from the pockets to the main piping. These pipes and buildings will cover and disrupt a lot of the environment, document E. Over the years of using oil, there has been multiple oil spills. These spills have caused many animal deaths and ruined the surrounding area for a long period of time. The areas where the oil spills have happened still haven’t really been set back to its natural state. If an oil spill happens in ANWR, the environment will be ruined. The spill might have just been in one area but it affects the entire
