Mattie M. Wood Professor Jonnie Genova ENG 122- 033 19 November 2015 According to the Oxford Dictionary a fraternity is “A male students' society in a university or college” (OED). This generally would be how any person asked what a fraternity is would explain it as, but has the idea of a fraternity changed? Is it still a male student society or is it more just a group young men working together to get girls? The first fraternity that came to life was in 1776 and was named Phi Beta Kappa. The motto for Phi Beta Kappa was “Love of wisdom, guide of life.” This fraternity was men and women connecting to fill each student’s life up with something meaningful, they volunteered, and threw safe gatherings around campus. After interviewing Jeff Karlson a Brown University “Whiskey” Fraternity Alum and Garrett Wassom a pledge of Chi Phi at Cu Boulder, the differences between the times showed. The questioned the two were asked was “Did you or have you experienced rape on or associated with your fraternity?” the reply from Jeff was “Fraternities’ were a big part of my life and during my 4 years at Brown University I never experiences “rape” or anything close to that. Its upsetting to see and hear that your argument for this project is about rape, but then again maybe things have changed since I went to school.” Jeff has been out of school for 12 years now so the fraternity scene has changed since he graduated, but even an old alum is disappointed in what new fraternities have become. Garrett on the other hand gave a clear and honest response sharing, “This is my home now Mattie, and these are my brothers some are good but they can do bad, that doesn't mean I'm saying they would rape a girl but that doesn't mean they wouldn't in the moment and or while drunk. I can say that I don't believe any of these guys would rape a girl if he was sober or so I would hope.” He even understands that sexual assaults could most likely happen, but that clearly doesn’t effect that he is associating himself with the type of people who would rape someone. These two interviewees had drastically different opinions on rape due to the fact that fraternities aren’t what they used to
