At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven school teachers. Their colors are Royal Blue and Gold. The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority aims to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development, and resources toward removing barriers and inequalities so that all people of America may develop their potential and exercise full citizenship (Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.,2016).
My profile essay is going to be over Delta Sigma Theta Mu Sorority Inc. I will be talking about the history, benefits, and interesting facts. I will be interviewing a sister from the sorority to get personal facts and experiences they have encountered. The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.
He states, “Most college kids spend more time drinking than studying. And they still get mostly A’s” (1). In other words, college students are spending their time developing a habit of drinking versus studying or learning. He also argues that the only way to solve this issue is by “implementing policies or guidelines” (2). It has taken a lot of effort from faculty and students to get rid of grade inflation, but schools such as Wellesley College and Reed College have been successful.
Campus Carry Law will be established with the purpose of making the campus safer, but in reality it will create an unsafe environment; it will grant students the right to carry a gun on campus for self-protection, but the law should be postponed for the reason that it will cause a hazardous environment in college campus. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 16, 1920 at Howard University in Washington D.C. This sorority was envisioned by five coeds who wanted a direct positive change, wanted to raise consciousness among their people, and, most importantly,they wanted to encourage the highest standards of scholastic excellence. Besides scholastic excellence, Zetas also believe in community service. Zetas have also implemented a National Educational Foundation community outreach services.
College: An Unsuccessful Diversification Project In her article, “Why America is Self-Segregating,” Danah Boyd emphasizes the importance of diversity in our social connections and explains, as members of a nation, we are segregating ourselves. Through culture, ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic background, fragmentation is occurring daily. Boyd realizes that diversity is hard, but believes it is a crucial part of a successful democracy. Boyd explains that while the original goal of social media may have been to connect people from different cultures and nations, its effects have been working in the opposite direction.
In addition to monetary obstacles, societal obstacles are a part of many college student lives as well. There are many different societies in college which means that there are many different societal obstacles to possibly deal with. There are plenty of obstacles that college students will encounter and they can simply avoid them. These are issues such as smoking or drinking. Students who are around crowds who like to smoke and drink could possibly pressure the college student to do either or even both.
In the opposition of this view, others are concerned about the benefits of the organization will bring to the students. Many would oppose the Greek life actions and get carried away with focusing on the negatives than the positives aspects of group. But the Sorority and Fraternity life is also known for their connections and better performance after college life. According to USA today, In addition to feeling prepared for the real world, fraternity and sorority graduates report being engaged in their workplace in greater numbers than other graduates, as rate of 43% compared to only 38%. As the rates of successful rate for the future among the Greek members are higher than non- Greek members, the risk of health and abuse of binge drinking
So the status that fraternities are making is that physical harm is okay to the better professional career that they might not see. Generally speaking, the Greek life’s alcohol reason is toxic to someone 's professional
Some might say that the use of alcohol is common place and nothing more than a stepping stone in the ritual of being a college student. The problem is the consequences of binge drinking and excessive drinking should not be accepted as “ritual” or common place. Some consequences are extremely problematic and not only impact the individual but have lasting consequences for the college environment in a global sense.
