Olivia Williams Arguments Against Euthanasia

For this week discussion, I would like to take the role of the parents. When I first read the article, it did not take me too much time to think whether it is good or bad for a kid to request euthanasia. As a parent, I condemn this law. Some may argue that it is ethical to give kids the same option as adult in ending life. Olivia Williams was a pediatrician in Belgium who has tried to save lives of children who have serious health issues, such as terminal cancer. She worked in one of Brussels' best critical-care wards. She mentioned in one of her statement that during her career, she has seen some children requesting euthanasia because they were suffering. When we were little, we used to believe in certain things, but when grew up we realized that those things we used to belief were lies or wrong. For example, when I was a little boy when I hear “the sun rises on the East” I used to believe the sun can move on its own, but when I grew up I have learned that the sun cannot move, it is rather the earth that revolves around the sun. When you learn something you will possess a knowledge on it and knowledge requires times and experiences. This means that those who were asking to die do not anything about the life or death, they do not possess the ability of discernment. They were asking for euthanasia because of the pain that they were going through, however there are many drugs available that can reduce those pain. Moreover, children are not moral agent. A moral agent is someone who have the ability to distinguish right and wrong. Doherty argues that a moral agent is someone who is capable to understand the situation before taking an action (Purtilo & Doherty, 2011). According to the Belgium law, you cannot smoke or drink if you are under 16. Plus, someone who is ender 18 cannot marry or vote because they assume that if you are bellow these ages you do not have the competence, but now they are saying that children have the competence to choose euthanasia (Belgian Proposal, 2014).
