Have you ever felt like you don’t belong wherever you go? Have you ever felt like nothing is going your way? Lynda Mullaly Hunt, the author of One for the Murphys, intriguingly describes the life of a teenage foster child with many problems dealing with her foster family, her real family, and her friends. One for the Murphys is a story about a twelve-year-old foster child, living with a lovely foster family. After her mom went to the hospital for being abused by her step-dad, Carley’s life changed, from being a Las Vegas girl to becoming a Connecticut girl with a family she never knew existed. When her Mom is finally good enough to be able to take care of her, Carley begins to move out. Because of this, Carley is heartbroken and conflicted, she doesn’t know whether she should stay or go, but realizes having her mom back is a good thing. One time when Carley visited her mom in the hospital, her mom said in tears, “‘And I thought that if those people wanted to keep you, that…’ She puts her hands over her face. ‘That you would have a better life without me.’ ‘But you’re my mom!’” (Hunt, 202). For this reason, Carley learns that her mom cares about her and wants her to have a good life. After being with the Murphys for so long, they taught her that people can be trusted and that people can be helpful. In this case, even after her mom turned on her, she realized after going to the Murphys that forgiveness is a part of life and is needed to get through the toughest times. Overall, Carley turned out to be a better kid by staying in the Murphy household becauses now she is finally able to trust
