On September 1, 1939, World War II was started. September 2, 1945 was when the war finally ended after six long years of battling. The result of the United States dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, Japan was what ended the war. The war was fought between the Allies, and the Axis. Many of the Allied forces are still at peace with each other to this day. Multiple major events, and battles happened during World War II. D-Day was the name of the day that the allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France during WWII. The allied forces were on their way to liberate the Jewish people in Eastern Europe. Operation Overlord was the name of the operation to invade Normandy. 425,000 is the total number of men who were either missing, wounded, or killed during the invasion for both Germans, and Americans. At the end of the day, the Americans became victorious, but they also had many of their soldiers eradicated by the enemies. After the Germans surrendered, the Japanese were the only enemies left. The Americans wanted revenge for getting bombed at Pearl Harbor. The U.S. did give the Japanese a chance to surrender though.
