In 2013, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Lance Armstrong admitted that he had taken banned substances, including Erythropoietin (EPO), testosterone, cortisone and Human growth hormones, as well as participated in blood doping enhancing his performances during his seven Tour de France victories (Telegraph Sports, "Lance Armstrong's interview with Oprah Winfrey: the transcript"). Lance Armstrong is synonymous with a healthy lifestyle. As a seven time Tour de France winner, his lifestyle consists of healthy eating habits and ample amounts of exercise. In 2008, “the seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor [teamed up] with Santa Monica-based Demand Media on a for-profit website [Livestrong.com] that helps users stay on track with fitness and weight-loss goals (Menn, "Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong gets a boost from Demand Media").” Livestrong.com was a spinoff of the Livestrong.org website which was founded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 (Bicycleretailer.com, "Lance Armstrong Launches New Website"). Even though Armstrong purported a healthy lifestyle, the fact that he continually took performance enhancing drugs, such as EPO, and participated in blood doping during his cycling career, is counterintuitive to a healthy lifestyle and one that would result in an internal dissonance …show more content…

Since this drug had been used to treat his cancer and ultimately saved his life, Armstrong may not have seen the use of this drug as contradictory to a healthy lifestyle, but instead as a life sustaining drug that had the added benefits of enhancing his cycling performance. This acquired information about the drug and the knowledge of its lifesaving properties could create the consonance that would allow his healthy lifestyle and use of performance enhancing drugs to coexist
