On January 29th, 1954, Oprah Winfrey was born on a farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Soon after she was born, her parents separated and had left Oprah with her grandmother on the farm. At the age of two and a half she was already learning to read due to having a very strict grandmother, and when it came to be time to go to school, she skipped kindergarten after writing a note to her teacher saying she belonged in first grade, after that year she was promoted to third grade. At the age of six, Oprah moved to Milwaukee to be with her mother and two half brothers in the ghetto area. She had been sent to her father’s house in Tennessee for a brief period of time. When she went on into a speaking contest, Oprah had won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. Shortly after Oprah had won her scholarship, she was invited to the White House for a conference about youth. Then, on a popular radio station in Nashville, Oprah was crowned Miss Fire Prevention, after that, she was offered a job at the radio station to read the afternoon news cast. In her first year of college, Winfrey was offered a job at CBS News, she declined it twice but, after talking to her speech teacher at her college, she decided to take the job. This teacher encouraged her by reminding her that job offers from CBS is why people go to college (Biography.com). She was the very first African American woman co-anchor. After becoming a morning talk show host, Oprah moved to Chicago, Illinois to work as an anchor for A.M Chicago. A year after she took her job in Chicago, her talk show was so inspiring that it came to be known as The Oprah Winfrey Show.
