On May 15th the town of Humboldt and Hartford voted on an Opt-out that affects the budgeting of the school. That night it was announced that the Opt- out had passed. What this vote does is change the amount of money that the school can receive from taxes. In the state of South Dakota, the schools have a specific amount of money they can use for taxes. To receive more money the school would need to opt out of this amount for a new amount that the school board decides. The Opt-out vote will give the West Central school the ability to change the amount of taxes they receive. The West Central school, is severely in debt. This means they can no longer afford to have all the programs they have. If this vote did not pass many programs including drama, gymnastics, and other groups will have been cut.

Drama is a way for student to meet new people and express themselves. The arts are also important to the nation, “93% of Americans believe that the arts are essential to a complete education” (AATE). Also, “79% of Americans feel that the arts should be a priority in education reform” (AATE). The arts are an important part of West Central and by cutting the drama program, many students will not be able to express themselves. Freshman Abby Fraas said this about drama, “Drama is important to me because it allows me to express myself in a way that is different than reality. It allows me to get away from reality for a little and play out a whole new story that isn't mine.” With the Opt-out passing a new drama director will be hired and the drama program will
