Organ donation is one of science's miracles that saves lives every day. Sadly, there just isn’t enough motivation for people to donate. “Twenty people die each day waiting for a transplant” (organdonor.gov). A lot of people support donation but aren’t signed up to donate. Why is that? Does religion play a part? Will paying them motivate them to do so? What could be some other factors that cause people not to be donors? These questions should be logical based on what people should feel morally guilted to do but sometimes they aren’t. Why do so many say they support donation, but yet they aren’t a donor? I think that a lot of that falls back on how people view the medical world. A lot of people don’t trust the medical world. This is entirely not true. In 2016, there were over 100,000 people on the transplant list. Less than 20,000 of those people actually received an organ. A study found that the vast majority of people asked about organ donation believed that there were more donors than patients. Of more awareness is put out there, then maybe more people would fill the empty spaces and become donors. One question that surrounds organ donation is if money would motivate people to become donors. The National Kidney Foundation says no. In a study that they conducted, ninety-two percent of people said that even if money were involved, they still wouldn’t donate. If anything, being offered money to donate organs reinforces the idea of medical mistrust and exploitation. More than that, money plays a part in people not donating for fear that the family would be charged with the costs of the donation
