Organized Religion In George Orwell's Animal Farm

In the Political Satire, Animal Farm, George Orwell used animals to tell a story of Russian history. Not only were connections placed in Stalinist Russia but also on other historical people and events. One character that stood out was Moses, the tame raven. Moses represented organized religion because he spread his word about the afterlife, he was a religious messenger system, and was liked eventual by most animals! The first reason why Moses represented a organized religion was because he loved to spread his thoughts about the afterlife. In this case Moses was the church in Stalinist Russia since that was the main target of the story to begin with. Moses in the Bible was the messenger of God. The Ten commandments were given to him and he lead the enslaved Jews out of Egypt where they would be free. Now Moses in Animal Farm left the story for a long period of time but was reintroduced. This was sudden and unexpected but the animals seemed to love it and kept working for Napoleon. Napoleon saw that the animals were losing hope and weren't seeing the point of the revolution anymore so he allowed Moses to come back to the farm after he left with Mr. Jones. The animals listened and were calmed by his talks of candy mountains and a peaceful place where they could one day rest for life. As Moses persuaded the rest of the animals to keep working toward a wonderful end, he was also getting a grill of beer for his work from Napoleon. “ In the middle of summer Moses the Raven suddenly reappeared on the farm, after an absence of several years. He was quite unchanged, still did no work, and talked in the same strain as ever about Sugarcandy Mountain(117).” Moses has made his rounds from Stalinist Russia to the Bible but we have one more stop, the American …show more content…

Although it doesn't seem like many of the animals liked Moses it was clear that he came back to Animal Farm for a reason. However some animals were very open to confessing their interest for Moses's teachings. To connect, Napoleon is Stalin, and during Stalin's power in Stalinist Russia, he had a plan to replace the church all together with science. Why this plan didn't work was very simple, not only did the people actually enjoy church, but it was very useful for the totalitarian system. In the story, when the animals wanted to give up and were wishing that Jones was back, Napoleon would introduce Moses back into the farm and would rave about if they worked now, they would forever live in peace once they had passed. “ Moses who was Mr. Jones especial pet, was a spy and a talebearer, but he was also a clever talker.
