Introduction
Pollution is one of the most important environmental, social, and health issues in today’s time. It is crucial to address pollution issues because it is making Earth, our home, dirty and unsuitable to live in.

The main cause of pollution is undoubtedly anthropogenic activities performed to meet the demands of the ever-growing human population. Activities such as agriculture, transport, urbanization, etc. all contribute to the growing issues of pollution. Out of all those activities, industrialization is arguably the most concerning. Most of the pollution can be traced backed to some industrial source. Whether it is the smoke …show more content…

Scott Wilson. The Orica Botany Site has been the subject of many high-profile industrial contamination. We went there to understand what Orica is, the contamination caused by the industrial park, and what has been and is being done for remediation.
Background
Orica
Orica (formerly ICI Australia) is an Australian-based multinational company that supplies commercial explosives and cutting edge blasting systems to the oil and gas construction, mining, and quarrying industries. In fact, it is largest provider of those services in the world. It has also established itself as a leading supplier of sodium cyanide, which is used for gold extraction, and ground support services for mining and tunneling (Orica Limited, n.d.).

The headquarter of Orica Limited is Melbourne. But since 1942, it has been operating a chemical manufacturing facility at the Botany Industrial Park (BIP), Sydney, which has been causing significant contamination of, but not limited to, the surrounding air, land, and groundwater aquifer.

It is also independent of Orica, and handles other facilities across Australia.
• Orica Australia Pty Ltd runs the Groundwater Treatment Plant and cares for site legacy issues, including the HCB Waste Repackaging Plant.

Additionally, the BIP also manages activities with other companies that lease land on site from Orica. They are: Ixom, which operates the former Orica ChlorAlkali plant, Air Liquide, KBR (engineering), and Broadspectrum (BRS) (maintenance, projects, and turnarounds) (Botany Industrial Park, n.d.).

Because of poor environmental management and waste disposal practices up until the 1980s in the BIP, considerable amount of the underlying soil and groundwater were contaminated by the chemicals coming out from the park (NSW EPA, 2014). It raised major concerns among the state government and public because a residential area is located immediately to the eastern side of the park along Denison Street, Hillsdale, while industrial or commercial land uses border the rest of the site. Orica took it upon itself to address and remediate those contaminations in the Botany site.
